Let's be together for equitable urban nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation.
Tuwe Pamoja is an African collaborative and capacity strengthening project that works across the four key cites of Lusaka, Cape Town, Nairobi and Accra. It is led by a consortium of NGOs, community-based organisations and research institutes, as well as regional Sub-Saharan African networks.
By using transdisciplinary, place-based and multi-actor nodes, Tuwe Pamoja enables various needs, priorities and knowledge to frame NBS for urban development that is locally driven, equitable and appropriate. It aims to achieve this through three core focus areas.
Strengthened capacities
For understanding intersectional lived experiences of climate-related risks and NbS.
Ehanced multi-actor collaborations
To deliberate the trade-offs, synergies, costs and co-benefits of NbS within climate-resilient development pathways (CRDPs).
Sharing of tools, methods and insights
To support the design and implementation of equitable urban NbS across regional and international networks.
Tuwe Pamoja is among the CLARE Research portfolio of projects. It is coordinated and managed by researchers from the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town, including those at the PiNC Lab.
Our team
The Tuwe Pamoja project consortium represents 10 partners based in four key Sub-Saharan African cities: Lusaka (Zambia), Cape Town (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya) and Accra (Ghana).
City academic leads are from the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, University of Zambia and the University of Nairobi.
City NGO and CBO leads are from Slum/Shack Dwellers International (SDI). This includes country affiliates and local community organisers from SDI federations based in each key city. They also participate as project team members and co-investigators.
Regional sharing and impact activities are carried out by all project team members, including SDI, and C40Cities. Tuwe Pamoja principal investigators are PiNC Lab lead Dr Petra Holden and ACDI Director Prof Gina Ziervogel.
